Welcome to the official site of Bon Repos Abbey.
The Abbey of Bon Repos is set in the heart of the beautiful countryside of central Brittany, alongside the Nantes Brest Canal. The name, when translated means 'Good Rest' and the legend says that after a tiring day hunting in the Quénécan Forest back in 1184, the founder of the abbey, Viscount Alain III de Rohan fell asleep in this spot. It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared in his sleep and asked him to found an abbey in that place.
The Cistercian Abbey has experienced many changes of fortune throughout its existence, it's most recent low point was in 1960 when it was a complete ruin, however, the local community were determined to save it and in 1986, their tenacity led to the founding of the Association des Compagnons de l'Abbaye de Bon-Repos - the association of Friends to the Abbey of Bon Repos.
Today Bon Repos Abbey accommodates several thousands of visitors to discover the restored buildings emphasized by many exposures and animations. The Friends of the Association are also very passionate about the contemporary art exhibitions that they hold every year at the Abbey.
